Borden was captain of the first ever Olympic Gold Medal team for U.S. women's gymnastics in 1996. She and her teammates appeared on the Wheaties cereal box and have also appeared on numerous television talk shows since their gold medal performance. Borden is a three-time World Championships team member and earned a silver medal in the team competition in 1994. She was a member of the gold-medal Pan American Games team and won the beam event. She also took second all-around and second on floor at the Pan American Games. She won beam and floor and took third all-around at the 1995 McDonald's American Cup. She was the 1994 Homecoming Queen at Finneytown High School where she was a member of the A-honor roll, the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Borden was chosen to demonstrate the new 1996 women's compulsories at the 1991 World Gymnastics Championships in Indianapolis.
