In 2001, Sayers became the captain of Great Britain's under 20s women's athletics team. This was the same year in which she became AAA U20 champion in the javelin. She also set a UK junior record this season.
At the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Sayers, still a junior, finished sixth in the javelin final. This was her first senior championships. In 2002, Sayers also won a silver medal at the European Junior Championships.
Sayers won her first senior AAA title in 2003, after competing in the European Cup, in Italy. She also finished fifth at the World Student Games, in Korea.
2004 saw Sayers travel to her first Olympic Games, where she finished ninth in her qualifying group. She did, however, defend her AAA title earlier in the year.
In 2005, Sayers made the final of the World Championships, where she finished twelfth. This result was replicated at 2006 European Championships.
In June 2007, Sayers followed up her still young UK record with a win at the European Cup, First League, in Vaasa, Finland. Here, Sayers threw 60.41 m.
After a successful 2007 season, Sayers headed to the World Championships in Osaka with high hopes. However, she failed to make the final, finishing 18th overall in qualifying with a sub-standard throw of 57.23 m.
