PROFILE
Joanne Peters was a promising midfielder for the Australian team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 1999. She started two matches but could not help her side from crashing out rather bleakly in the opening stage. Now plying her trade successfully for the New York Power in the WUSA, Peters is a creative force that may be a deciding factor in how large Australia’s impact on the tournament is. She is the type of player confident, positive and incisive that makes a team both entertaining and dangerous. She is also versatile in the middle of the pitch, winning the ball, creating goals and occasionally getting forward on her own. She scored six times in the Oceania Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament, including the opener in the all-important 2-0 victory over main Oceania rivals, New Zealand. Also a team co-vice captain with Sacha Wainwright, Peters is one of the veterans of a young Aussie team despite her relative youth. She made her international debut at the age of 17, scoring for the first time as well in that match (against New Zealand). Despite having a serious knee injury and staying out of the national team set-up for over two years, “Joey” should win her 50th cap at the 2003 Women’s World Cup. Australia and Power captain Cheryl Salisbury concurs that Peters brings much to the side.
