Professional triathlete Michellie Jones, one of the world’s most outstanding triathletes, didn’t take long to rise above the competition. Her first triathlon was in 1988, and in 1991 she finished third at the ITU World championships, winning Rookie of the Year. In 1992 and 1993, she won back-to-back ITU World titles. Jones transitioned from Olympic- to iron-distance events in 2004 and took second place in the 2005 Ironman World Championship—her second iron-distance attempt. Jones dominated in first place at 2006 Ironman Arizona, her nearest competitor was over 20 minutes back.
